Book Review: The Chase by Pamela Humphrey

First, I’ll say that I received this book as an ARC at no cost to myself. That being said, Pamela is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. So, if you’ve read Pamela’s other books, you’ll understand why. I’ve really enjoyed reading all of the books in the series as well as this one. While it’s not part of the Hill Country Secrets series, it includes some of the characters from it. Here’s the blurb for The Chase from Amazon:

Serendipity brings them together.

A stalker threatens to tear them apart.

Detective Ben Torres knows trouble when he sees it. She’s standing in front of him, wearing a red dress and sending silent signals that she’s afraid. Despite his attraction, after ensuring her safety as best he can, he walks away. But some women are impossible to forget.

Marisa Ramirez is trying to escape an abusive relationship and make sure her much-older boyfriend pays for his crimes. Once he’s arrested and out of her life, happiness should be in reach, but her insecurities keep her from trusting the detective who doesn’t hide his interest. Not only is he her brother’s friend, he knows too much.

This is a spin-off of the Hill Country Secrets series. Many of the characters from those stories make an appearance in this book.

Getting to know Marisa better in this book was great. Her flirty nature was fun, but when she pulled away from Ben I felt for her. Trying to get away from an abusive relationship can be very traumatic. I speak from personal experience. And learning to trust can be just as traumatic, whether it’s trusting another person or yourself. The battle Marisa fights within herself is a tough one, but she finally overcomes it by the end of the story. Watching Ben persevere and help her realize she deserves better than she’s had in the past is heartwarming. It gives us faith that there are still good men in this world. The suspense of some of the situations Marisa ends up in kept me wanting to read more so I could see what happened. It takes her a while to accept the fact that everyone needs to be rescued by someone at some point.

Make sure you follow Pamela on Facebook and her other social media sites and check out her website as well: https://phreypress.com/. I truly hope you enjoy reading my book reviews even though most of them aren’t very long. I like sharing my thoughts about what I’m reading. I’m not sure what’s up next, but I have quite the stash in my Kindle app on my tablet. Thanks for stopping by and as always, feel free to drop a line or leave a comment any time!
